Doctors, death and deceit, part 8

As you will know from previous blogs my mother in law, who used to be largely independent despite the effects of a stroke, fell and broke her hip last month. This was fixed with a hemiarthroplasty but she has lost a lot of strength and confidence and can no longer transfer herself from wheelchair/chair/toilet/bed etc. We forget how frail old people can get.

This has meant an extra level of care sonce she was mistakenly let out of hospital (without the abilities she went in with - I blame the doctor and physios who did sweet f*** all). She can just about afford the care she is getting, but she needs more, especially at bedtime when, after she has been winched into bed with the stupid hoist thing, my wife has to change her like a ten stone (140 pound) baby. There's going to be a financial assessment to see if my mother in law can get care at a reduced rate or with a cap to the cost - that way she can get the proper attention in her own home (she doesn't want to go into a care home) without the risk of us being ill, injured, in hospital, on holiday etc. People will be able to visit without any worry of the old lady (she's 78) being in a mess and things will be better all round.
