Have Christians missed the point?

In his book 'The Authentic Gospel of Jesus,' the renowned Biblical scholar Geza Vermes looks at the times of the historical Jesus and at Jesus the man. He uses facts and logic and produced a coherent, learned text in the process. One thing that leaps out of it is the fiery, Aramaic-speaking Jew at the centre. Not the Son of God, not someone born of a virgin, and not sat at the right hand of the Father as part of the Holy Trinity - but the flesh and blood man. Jesus saw the corruption of the religion that should have been open to all, including women, children and the sick, but the elitist heirarchy preferred the exclusivity and control and to consort with the ancient equivalent of Wonga.com in the Temple. It was a disgraceful travesty and he fought it the only way he could. He spoke eloquently to followers but made them think. He was a man of principle. He stuck his neck out for us lot. In the end he was betrayed by his Elders and murdered by Roman cronies and puppets because the truth he brought frightened them. No need for Divinity. He was simply a most amazing man - definitely one to believe in. Jack Orchison, November 30, 2013.
